The lotus petal is the "perfect shape." In Indian art it is used to depict the perfection of almost every part of the facial or divine anatomy, eg four petals depict the lips, two petals : the nose, one petal : the ear etc. The cross too is the perfect sacrifice. It is an attempt to explain Christian theology through Hindu symbolism.
